Task 1-
PLANNING
My selected sub genre myself and my partner have decided is British gangster, because we think this genre will relate more to modern day society and we will be able to empathise with the characters more, and do things more effectively because we are young and know the dark ways of today’s society. Also the harsh realities of gangs and crime can be captured in a sophisticated, productive way.
We are aiming to do a film similar to the classic ‘Kidulthood’ which reflects the progression of modern gang's lifestyle in comparison to a film like ‘Pulp Fiction’ which is more significant to an older target audience who can understand this type of crime more due to the differentiation between both types of gangster, modern and classic.
I have decided I do not want to put the credit sequence because the credits take away the realism of the film, and the aim is to make a statement and emotional impact with the audience. Not to continually admonish the quixotic part of the film which is the actors and actresses etc.
Music and sound in themselves makes the audience to connect with the scene more because sound allows people to emphasise with the characters more. For example if someone was sad, you would put sad non- diegetic music in the background to reinforce the sadness in the character. And if it was a part in the film where it climaxes, the music would also climax to so the audience climaxes with the music. Also music can reflect the chosen characterisation in different people in the film. We are unequivocally going to use sound and music in our film opening because it provides advantages which can make more of an impact on the audience. We are going to use common gangster music which is applicable to our generation and we will be able to particularize with people in our generation making it more pragmatic. We are going to use a song that sounds like ‘Slut’ By Dream Mclean throughout our opening because it will complement the imagery in the film. We are going to use tracks that associate with characters because it will allow the audience to identify the characters when they are being introduced to the scene, we were thinking something almost like a theme tune. We are also thinking of emotional relating music which can allow the audience to emotionally comprehend with the characters.
The locations are key because it can reflect the whole scene. In ours we are going to use basic places like shopping malls and town. Even places like the bear pit because it is known for its underground gangster and drugs scene. I am currently looking at other places such as Lawrence weston because this place is also nationally known for its crime influence. Places like these will also endorse a instinctive acknowledgement from the modern youth assemblage.
The first character is the main character. She is a misleading and enticing character because she is known as a bad girl throughout where she lives, and she is untouchable in the gang scene. She steals and lies to be able to get her own way and shows no sign of remorse to her ‘victims’, until she breaks down to her mother. I was thinking for this girl we could call her Saskia Black and nickname her ‘Sas’ to her ‘Friends’.
The second character would be her mother. Who is really timid and is fearful to stand up for herself to her abusive daughter who constantly lies and steals from her. I was thinking for this characters name it should be something like Emily Black because the first name has no edge but the second name reflects that she is related to Saskia.
The other characters a have not been decided in depth yet but they are going to be the victims and people that are part of the gang. I am going to ensure that the characters have different types of characterisation to create a simplistic but realistic effect.
The opening scene of the film is there to introduce the characters and their personality, along with their aims and purpose in the film. I am going to establish the bitter phenomenon of being in a gang and the consequences to preserve the reputation of a gangster. It is key that I state the plot roughly aswell, because then the characters can take a guess too what the film would be about. Another important fact is managing the atmosphere and manipulating the script along with the imagery to get an emotional response to the mix of the both.
